“We gave birth to healthy babies!” or “Our babies were born and it was so great holding them after delivery!”  Those are quotes that I never was able to say.  Sit down and grab a snack.  My pregnancy and birth story goes a little something like this…

I had my first ultrasound in July of 2011.  That is the day that changed my life.  I was not only pregnant…but it was twins!  The excitement quickly came to halt when the tech told me that “Twin B” was extremely small.  When you’re pregnant with twins, you automatically are considered high risk, but after the tech expressed her concerns, I quickly realized this was not going to be a “typical pregnancy with twins”.

Once I hit 5 months (21 weeks), “Twin B” was classified as IUGR, which stands for Intra-Uterine Growth Restriction.   At every appointment, this term kept coming up.  No one could really explain the impact of what this meant.  They simply just kept an eye on it for precautionary measures.

At 34 weeks, I ended up giving birth to my twins via C-section.  I was only able to look at them from the corner of my eye because both were rushed to the NICU.  If you’ve had a C-section, then you know it takes time to get stiched back up and then get the feeling back in your legs.  After about 1.5 hours I was able to get wheeled into the NICU on a hospital bed, look at my twins again, and then went back to my room to rest.

“Twin A” who later was named Julius weighed 4.5 lbs and spent 14 days in the NICU.  “Twin B” who was later named Genell weighed 3.2 lbs.  She spent a total of 45 days in the NICU at 2 different hospitals due to suffering from NEC, also known as Necrotizing Enterocolitis.  She spent her first Christmas away from us and I had to learn very quickly how to balance pumping, getting that breast milk to her in Jacksonville, FL along with keeping enough for her brother who was back in Daytona, along with recovering from the C-section.  I’ll just say, IT WAS NOT EASY…BUT BY THE GRACE OF GOD I SURVIVED!

Julius and Genell spent their 1st two months of life away from each other.  On 1.17.2012, the twins were 5 weeks and I was finally able to hold both of them together!  Then on 1.28.17, they were reunited at home….FINALLY!
