I’ve always been taught “make the best of every situation”. I never truly understood the power in that phrase…until now. I am extremely proud to say that I am the Founder and Executive Director of a non-profit in the making called Here For A Reason, Inc. —
In 2017, my daughter’s severe health condition was considered an afterthought, and she was terminated from Maryland’s state health insurance program. Because of this, we have received numerous medical denials for services and equipment that is medically necessary for her well-being. This decision from our state left me confused, frustrated, and disappointed, to say the least. Despite the turmoil, I turned, what most would consider a “bag of lemons”, into a nice cold and refreshing glass of lemonade.
Why did I choose the name “Here For A Reason”?
As a first time mom, when I found out both of my twins were special needs, I was nervous, scared and unsure of myself because I didn’t know if I could handle it! I could’ve let the news and the unexpected way of life tear me down, but I have managed (giving thanks to God) to remain positive. I look at it this way, my twins, are Here For A Reason. I’ve gained an astronomical amount of patience and have learned so much about the medical world, and myself, because of them.
Believe it or not, the individual(s) that created the guidelines that kicked my daughter off of Maryland state insurance are Here For A Reason as well. Let me break it down. If it wasn’t for their unruly policies, I would be oblivious to the dark side of medical insurance. I would not have known there are hundreds of families enduring what we have endured. Lastly, I would not have discovered the extreme amount of loopholes in the broken structure of our government offices that impact the health and life of families with a member who has a disability.
My family and I still don’t have everything that we need, but what I do have is peace of mind. I strongly believe that my family, someday, will get what we deserve. But for now, in the midst of our battle, Here For A Reason, Inc. was created for families in need. Now I’m not saying I can change the world, but with the power behind a group of individuals (myself included), we can make a difference. I am thrilled to say that I have a team, which according to the non-profit world, who I call my Board of Directors. We, as a unit, are Here For A Reason, Inc.
Over the last 2 years, I had lemon after lemon after lemon thrown at me, but as mentioned before, no matter the circumstance, everything happens for a reason and everyone is Here For A Reason. I invite you to share my “lemonade” with others and am forever grateful for everything that has happened in my life to get me to this point. This is only the beginning and I thank you for following our journey thus far!
